Handbells originated in the late 18th century in England to give “change ringers,” the musicians who rang church steeple bells, a way to rehearse their complicated ringing sequences in a smaller and warmer environment. Handbells have been delighting congregations and assisting in worship ever since, and have done so at BSUMC since the early 1980’s.

Cynthia Johnson, current Director of Music and Worship at BSUMC, holds a B.S. in Music Therapy from Tennessee Tech and a Master of Music in Performance from Lee University. She has also served as a part time Instructor of Voice at Lee.
